I've had a camera in my hands for over 15 years, but my love for photography has never really been about the photos themselves. It's always been about people.
Some of the most meaningful lessons I've learned about photography came during my time in the military. I photographed friends and fellow service members without realizing that one day those images would become some of the only tangible pieces of memory left behind. Losing people I cared about changed the way I see photographs. They aren't just pictures. They're proof that someone was here. Proof of a life, a relationship, a moment that mattered.
That perspective has stayed with me ever since.
When I became a doula, I found myself witnessing some of the most raw, vulnerable, and beautiful moments a person can experience. I watched women dig deeper than they ever thought possible. I watched partners become parents. I watched families meet each other for the first time.
And over and over again, I saw how quickly those moments passed.
Birth is strange that way. You spend months preparing for it, and then suddenly it's over. The details blur together. The sounds, the emotions, the little moments in between contractions, the way your partner looked at you, the first time you touched your baby. They're some of the most important moments of your life, yet they're often the hardest to hold onto.
That's why I fell in love with birth photography.
Not because birth is beautiful all the time... it isn't. It's messy. It's intense. It's unpredictable. It's strength and surrender existing at the same time. It's one of the few experiences in life that completely changes who you are before the day is over.
I believe those moments deserve to be remembered.
As both a certified birth photographer and doula, I have the privilege of supporting families while also preserving pieces of their story that they may not even realize are happening in the moment. The tears, the laughter, the quiet pauses, the overwhelming love, the people surrounding you—I document it all because one day those moments will mean even more than they do right now.
At the end of the day, photography isn't about perfect images for me. It's about creating something that brings you back. Something that lets you remember how it felt.
Because long after the moment is gone, the story remains.
